Recruiting: Soldiers

Requirements of Soldiers in the 2nd Reg't of Lincoln Militia


*NOTE:  BEFORE buying anything, please consult the Unit Commander/Group Staff.

Physical And Safety:

  • Recruits must have two front teeth which meet for the purpose of biting open the cartridge.
  • Recruits must be sixteen years upon the earth before being permitted to fire a musket.
  • Recruits must study the training manual and train with the Unit.  
  • Before being permitted to fire a musket, the recruit must competently demonstrate safe musket handeling proceedures subject to the discretion of the safety officer and /or commanding officer.  
  • Recruits must sign the mandatory safety documentation and be covered by the group's insurance plan.   

Clothing of the Gentleman around camp and of the Militiaman:

1 hat, period correct wool felt, straw, or knitted toque
1 workman's coat
1 weskit, wool, linen, cotton, silk, or combination of these fibers only
1 linen or cotton shirt, white
1 cravat, black, cotton, linen, silk or any combination of these fibers only
1 pair drop front trousers grey wool or natural/white wool, cotton, canvas, or linen
1 pair black or grey gaiters, wool or canvas
1 pair black shoes, square-toed

Optional Clothing:  The Redcoat Uniform of the 2nd Reg't of Lincoln Militiaman

1 British Redcoat - blue-faced red with plain wool lace
1 pair grey wool pants,
1 shako
1 neck stock or cravat
1 wesket, preferably same red wool as coat, linen back
1 hackle green (light infantry for shako)
1 light infantry badge for shako


Accoutrements for all Soldiers:

1 haversac (the bag we all carry our three day rations in!)
1 canteen (period correct)
1 set of leather belts (frogger and cartridge)
1 plain brass breast plate
1 cartridge box (period correct)
1 leather waist belt (optional to keep frogger and cartridge belts in place)
1 musket (The India pattern musket is our preferred style. Again, seek advice from Unit Commander/Group Staff before purchasing.)
1 bayonet
1 leather sling belt for musket (optional)


Mess Kit:

1 plate, wood or tin
1 bowl, wood or tin
1 cup, wood, tin, or period correct earthern ware
1 fork (period correct)
1 knife (period correct)
1 spoon (period correct)




Group Fees/Dues:

An annual total of $20.00 is collected at the AGM in January of each year for that year's events.
This includes:

Insurance fee, currently $15.00 
Group dues, currently $5.00 per member 16 years of age and older.
